'Hardcore' Professional Tone vs Coffee Tone

Being in HR industry is what I have always cheered for. I love my work and simply fit into the profile HR is meant for. I have had few success in my kitty when talking of recruiting right talent for my respective companies. You can tell that when you see the same candidate being with the company for few years and grown up his or her profile over the period of time. Undoubtedly, my maximum friends and pals have been because of my profession. It feels wonderful when people out of the blue Thank me for the help I have extended to them, though that is what is my job is.Overall, I have been a people's person.

The concern is my communication style. Having the recruitment profile for nearly 7.6 years now, I was bound to be on interrogating seat most of the time. My style of questioning people across the table has been quite European that is being very professional and formal at an initial note. Once I gauge the candidate's sincerity and seriousness, I tend to make them comfortable. That initial note on which I strike the chord with people has become second to my nature. It is the tone on my tongue for 24/7 that I am talking about. Few have told me that I sound like one from the call centre on phone. Ahhh!!! Another one told me not every room is HR room. Ghosh! where I am heading to?
Finally my Bestie confronted it asking me to smile a bit when I have a conversation across the coffee table, and specifically when I am on phone. I have been given accolades for performing well at work but personally, not many may prefer that HR tone which generally gives them the indication of ????? rather than an easy way talk. Even if I am having a casual talk with friends or just some strangers, I tend to get inclined towards creating some distance but that's not required or expected. After all- First impression can be the last impression.

So recently, a thought has occurred to me and I kind of realised it in full sense when one of my Bestie confirmed it on my face. I was taken aback on realising the extent to which my so called effective communication has been affected because of my pure HR/Recruitment communication skills. It certainly requires some homework to make it better and to make others at ease or may be more than that making myself at ease with them. Yes, every room is not Question Answer room.

Has that happened to you? Your professional skills becoming a hindrance in your personal growth?
